WEST VIRGINIA – The West Virginia Wing’s commander and members of the Martinsburg and Morgantown composite squadrons made sure Civil Air Patrol had a place at the table when educators, workforce development professionals, business and community leaders and students gathered Aug. 2-3 for a Student Success Summit at Morgantown’s Waterfront Place Hotel and Conference Center.
The event included a “Gallery Walk" that enabled participating organizations to display information about their programs and services to those in attendance. Staffing CAP’s display were Col. Dennis Barron, the wing’s commander, along with the Martinsburg squadron’s public affairs officer, Maj. Russ Voelker, and Cadet Capt. Natascha Harrison of the Morgantown unit. All spoke with numerous visitors.
Barron and several Morgantown members later participated in a panel discussion about the cadet program’s benefits.
The event was held as part of the state’s Common Ground Partnership, established in the wake of a 2011 memorandum of understanding among the West Virginia Wing, the West Virginia Department of Education, the state Board of Education and the military recruiting organizations that serve the state. The partnership is intended to provide career resources and tutoring as well as mentors to inspire, advise and enlighten students.
