Col. Thomas Carello is the new commander of the New York Wing, having filled the role on an interim basis since October.
Col. Daniel Leclair, Northeast Region commander, administered the oath of command to Carello on Jan. 25. The new commander was presented with his colonel’s grade insignia by Cols. Jack Ozer and Ken Andreu, former New York Wing commanders acting on LeClair’s behalf, in an event in Long Island.
Carello joined Civil Air Patrol in 1971. He served as commander of the Central New York Group from 2002-2006, as New York Wing chief of staff from 2006-2010 and as the wing's vice commander from May 2010-October 2016.
He holds Master ratings in the Command and Communications specialty tracks and is a qualified mission observer and radio operator.
During a recent cadet activity at the New Wing Cadet Education Center in Syracuse, Carello said while looking at a group of about 16 cadets, “This is why I am here; I believe in this program. It is all about the cadets.”
