HAWAII – The Hawaii Wing’s director of government/legislative affairs, Col. Stanley Fernandez, was honored with the title of “All American Commander” for the second straight year at the recent National Convention for the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Phoenix.
Fernandez also received an Outstanding Community Service Award at the convention, which heard addresses from President Barack Obama and retired Army Gen. Eric K. Shinseki, secretary of veterans affairs.
Each of those honored received a plaque, a diamond pin and a certificate signed by the commander-in-chief of the VFW, Glen Gardner. Fernandez also received a $599 stipend, and the VFW paid for his trip.
Fernandez recently stepped down as post commander of the Fort Shafter Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10276 in Oahu. He was instrumental in getting the VFW post to adopt and support the cadets in the West Oahu Composite Squadron with donations for flags, poles, harnesses and gloves so the unit could field a color guard.
The post will also present certificates and medals annually honoring an outstanding cadet officer and noncommissioned officer for the squadron.
