Crews from Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana searched for Miller's plane after he failed to reach the Georgetown Municipal Airport Thursday night. Miller was not flying on a CAP mission. The 16-year-old Towaco resident participated in the 10-day New Jersey Wing Eagle Glider Encampment last month, a program run by CAP, in Bethel, Pa. The encampment changed the course of O’Brien’s life. "I was always interested in flying, but while in (the encampment), I got interested in the military," O'Brien said. "I want to be an aviator in the military one day. The Army is my favorite branch."

Randal Leval, who said he was having a midnight snack at Denny's in Kahului with CAP members when his wife called, frantically saying the flames were higher than their neighbor's house. He said about four search-and-rescue exercises, or SAREXs, are held statewide each year. A base staff works from the office, coordinating the rescue exercise.

On Saturday, the Maine Civil Air Patrol simulated a hurricane striking the East Coast to practice emergency procedure. The exercise was coordinated by Civil Air Patrol units throughout the Northeast. Units throughout New England as well as ones in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey staged similar drills. Officials say it is the first time that the Northeast has had a region-wide disaster relief exercise in at least a decade.

Hyder, commander of the Tennessee Wing's Cleveland Composite Squadron, and her husband, Chris, are accepting open bids on their recently completed Country Music Stars Quilt, autographed by more than 25 legends of country music. The couple started sending out letters last fall to Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, George Strait, Crystal Gayle, Charlie Pride, the Statler Brothers and other country music celebrities who happily donated their autographs to raise funds for Susan’s medical bills and ongoing treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. The star-studded queen-sized quilt also includes an autograph by the late Jimmy Dean, who signed the Hyders' cloth before he passed. The Cleveland couple has set Sept. 30 as the tentative cut-off date for auctioning the celebrity quilt which they believe could become priceless someday.

After participating in the Air Force's Civil Air Patrol program for the past four years, Crockett already knows what it's like to always be on call. Crockett is a CAP cadet captain in Maryland Wing’s Frederick Composite Squadron, an experience she says will give her a headstart at A&M.

Airport Manager Rob Barnett said he believes the trailer is a total loss and there also was damage to roofs on sheds on the airport’s east side.

Some of them – second- and third-year students – get to expand on their basic skills by learning medical techniques, advanced rope systems and more. They are assisted by a staff of 100 CAP volunteers from as near as the New Jersey shore and from as far away as Hong Kong. She was among the 38 WASP killed in war-time plane crashes, the only WASP casualty from Wisconsin.

ALABAMA – Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Officer School returned to Maxwell Air Force Base this week, but with a new twist this year. Ten JROTC cadets from Alabama are attending the 2010 Cadet Officer School, a 10-day program modeled after the U.S. Air Force’s Squadron Officer School. The JROTC cadets’ attendance is the result of CAP’s partnership with JROTC, which is part of the Air Force’s training programs under the Holm Center at Maxwell.

The academy, which started Friday, teaches 20 Civil Air Patrol cadets from around the nation starting at 14 years of age to 20 how to fly a glider and prepare them for either a pre-solo flight or allow them to complete a solo flight. The flight academy is one of eight provided by CAP this summer, but only three offer full-time glider training.

The young men, ages 16 to 18, wrapped up a week of intensive flight training with the New Jersey Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, a volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force that assists local authorities and emergency agencies and also gives promising youngsters an introduction to flying. By Saturday, each cadet in the Falcon Flight program had completed 30 hours of classroom instruction and had spent nearly 12 hours in a Cessna cockpit with licensed pilots — all volunteers and CAP members.

During two missions, a CAP deHavilland DHC-2 Beaver simulated a low flying bush plane, and with most fighter planes up high, the Beaver attempted to sneak in low on a predetermined route. Melissa Weaver and Erika Hoefer, reporters with the Daily Inter Lake newspaper of Kalispell, were accompanied by Missoula pilot Sonny Kless and another Missoula man, Brian Williams. Radar tracking data placed the plane's last known position at around 300 feet above ground near the 18,500-acre bison range, located about 80 miles south of Kalispell. Witnesses in the area reportedly observed a low-flying plane around 4 or 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

  •  Green, Ohio, where CAP's Ohio Wing participated in the sixth annual Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Stark County Sheriff's Training Facilities. Members of Civil Air Patrol led by Capt Dave Stone, a retiree of the Stark County Sheriff's Department, retired more than 1,000 worn and tattered flags in front of a crowd of several hundred. CAP cadets, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Young Marines and AF ROTC cadets were some of today's youth who participated in the ceremony. 

  • Exeter Township, Pa., where CAP members from the Pennsylvania Wing's Reading Composite Squadron 811 retired about 400 worn and tattered flags in the veterans section of Forest Hills Memorial Park. Some of the flags' ashes were buried in the veterans section of the cemetery.

A former flight instructor at Tucson International Airport and a retired Continental Airlines pilot, Harper is a nearly 40-year member of CAP's Arizona Wing. "These exercises are important because it trains us to be better at what we do when we actually do get the call," he said.

The request is made in anticipation of pending Congressional legislation that would honor those CAP members meeting this criteria.Those considered need not be alive today or be current CAP members.

Names and contact information should be e-mailed to
paa@capnhq.gov or sent to Civil Air Patrol Public Affairs, 105 S. Hansell St., Maxwell AFB, AL 36112. In the case of deceased members, their names and the name of a close relative or friend, with contact information, should be sent. Those who qualify may be asked to submit substantiation of their CAP service, such as tangible items that could verify service during this period, such as a published news article, CAP identification card or certificate of membership.

"Civil Air Patrol is constantly flying missions over the Gulf Coast right now," said Capt. Donnie Todd, Alabama Wing's standardization/evaluation officer who helped organize the certification course. CAP's Alabama Wing and Southeast Region have stepped up their training efforts this summer to prepare aircrews for participation in the Deepwater Horizon response. To date, 40 CAP volunteers have been involved in the response, contributing more than 3,000 man-hours to the effort.

Mattingly was a cadet in Maryland Wing's St. Mary's Composite Squadron before graduating as the salutatorian of the class of 2006 at Leonardtown High School and enrolling at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Now a senior at Carnegie Mellon, Mattingly is one of 31 volunteers signed up for the 3,100-plus mile Bike & Build trip, which begins on June 24.
