CALIFORNIA -- A Civil Air Patrol ground search and rescue team working in a heavy rain reached the site of an aircraft crash in the Joshua Tree National Park late Monday night, in time to rescue a flight instructor and student who were trapped in the wreckage of a small plane in Joshua Tree National Park. The rescuers stabalized the two men until they could be airlifted to a nearby hospital, where their injuries are listed as critical. The rescue was all in a day's work, according to 1st Lt. Matt Scherzi, a public affairs officer from CAP's California Wing. "It's our job to save lives," Scherzi told KPSP Local 2 News of Thousand Palms, Calif. "We're there to save lives."
