Navy honors Civil Air Patrol, others involved in helicopter rescue

March 11, 2010

WEST VIRGINIA -- One month after a mountainside helicopter crash in a remote part of West Virginia, the U.S. Navy paused Wednesday to honor the Civil Air Patrol, West Virginia National Guard, Pocahontas and Randolph County first responders, local fire departments and West Virginia State Police who came to the rescue. "I can say I'm here today because of all the people in this room. I've never been more thankful in my life for the help that they've provided," said Kenneth Martin, the copter's crew chief. Rescuers braved rugged, snowy conditions to get to the crash site and managed to save all 17 of the crew members and passengers aboard the Navy copter.
