COLORADO – Members of the Colorado Wing were poised to respond Thursday after being contacted about a runaway hot air balloon believed to be piloted by a 6-year-old Fort Collins boy, the Santa Cruz Sentinel and Chico Enterprise Record reported. CAP never received an official call from federal authorities, but the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center actually did respond, sending two helicopters to follow the wayward experimental balloon, which broke from its tethers and flew haphazardly through the northern Colorado skies before landing in a field near Denver. The boy was not on board and was found safe several hours later, hiding in a box in the attic of his home.
