FLORIDA -- When the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center at Tyndall AFB contacts the Civil Air Patrol’s Hillsborough One Senior Squadron in Tampa, local members spring into action. Sometimes they discover that a missing plane landed safely at its destination and the pilot simply failed to file paperwork. Other times they find that someone manually flipped the transmitter’s switch on by accident. Occasionally planes are not equipped with transmitters or pilots do not file flight plans, and seekers cannot locate the missing craft.
